Only-men Ballroom
Culture, Tipical places
Via Sapuppo, 30 - 95121 Catania
Symbolic place of recreation for the LGBT community in the last century.
The rooms of the historic men-only Ballroom, the exterior elevation of which can still be admired today at via Sapuppo n° 30, represented an extremely important gathering and entertainment place for the LGBT community in the last century.
The doors of the ‘business opened to the public at 8 a.m., then closed at midnight. The prices for a dance were really ridiculously low, hovering around 20 cents of old lira.
Although it was not frequented solely by members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it was a safe place to listen to live music and waltz.
It was from here that the forty-five “iarrusi” were forcefully taken before being taken to the Piazza Lanza prison, and then deemed fit for “confinement” in the Tremiti Islands.
