The Etna Museum was created in Viagrande (CT) by the Associazione Amici della Terra in collaboration with different institutions, including the Etna Park and the National Geophysic Volcanologic Institute (INGV).
With more than 1500 square meters of modern exhibition center and is the main interactive educational exhibition about Etna, treating its natural, historical and ethno-anthropological aspects. The exhibition presents environments and exhibit dedicated to Etna with insights on nature trails, local products and the ancient and recent history.
The Etna Museum is also the largest museum about volcanoes in Italy and it has become one of the most visited educational scientific centers in Sicily. It is divided into thematic sections. The museum offers a modern and interactive view of volcanology and Etna and it offers the opportunity to appreciate, in a simple and attractive way, the complex world of Etna.
Among murals and dioramas to large-scale simulations of lava flow, three-dimensional models and lava caves, visitors will be in contact with the spectacular scenery of Etna environments. More than five hundred photographs, a collections of minerals and explicative dioramas that illustrate the eternal charm of the largest volcano in Europe. A large space is dedicated to the close relationship between Etna and its inhabitants. In fact, one of the purpose of the museum is make know and appreciate the Europe’s largest volcano.
The most famous eruptions are shown in the movie theater, also you can buy local products such as wine, oil and honey, you can enjoy with the activities related to snow and caves, discover myths, legends and the nature of Etna in its complexity and in its endless charm. The Museum also offers entertainment suitable for children with a thematic area dedicated to the world of dinosaurs, a fun movie in 3D and a workshop teaching creative.
In the large central room is exposed the original Angelo D’Arrigo’s Hang and there is an exhibition space dedicated to the exploits of the famous naturalist aviator. The thematic paths are proposed both in Italian and in English according to the modern concept of “edutainment”, that is the expositive methodology that aims to educational entertainment, with the objectives to know the area, to promote respect for and protection of the environment and fostering a culture of sustainability. In the museum you can find a book shop and services, without architectural barriers, it is suitable for students and tourists. The Museum of Etna is a unique place to study science and culture.
