San Matteo’s Church

Located along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, this Baroque church from 1633 was the seat of bankers and merchants. The interior is a riot of “marmi mischi” (typical Sicilian colored inlays) and stuccoes by Serpotta. It is a place that tells the story of Palermo’s economic wealth in the 17th century.

The famous sculptor Giacomo Serpotta is buried here. A useful detail: the facade is made of “Billiemi stone”, a local grey marble that resists erosion very well. It often hosts concerts of Baroque music precisely because of the exceptional acoustics of its naves. Don’t forget to look at the allegory statues.
