Port of Augusta

The Port is head office to the Capitaneria and offers unmissable sunsets and a truly evocative atmosphere.

The Port occupies the entire bay of Augusta and consists of three large sections:

• Porto Xifonio which is the part of the sea between the two points.
• Porto Megarese, is the internal bay section of the north / west coast bounded by the northern, central and southern dams.
• Breast of the Priolo, is the sector placed in front of the oil refining plants and is included between the southern Megarese dam and the Magnisi peninsula.

Being a perfect natural inlet, Porto has always been used. It was Frederick II of Swabia who built the fortifications that are still visible making it easier to control the entire bay.

The fortifications continued until the birth around the thirties of the important military naval base that still exists.
